The first step toward a sustainable apiary is the creation of nucleus colonies. They can be used for management, increase, or as a backup against winter losses.
These nucs are a smaller version of our excellent, Amish-crafted hives from Forest Hill Woodworking in Pennsylvania. The setup includes a screened bottom board with mite inspection board, entrance reducer, box-joined hive bodies, ventilating inner cover, and telescoping outer cover. The outer cover is finished with durable white aluminum flashing you can write on with a pencil. Notes about the hive's status will last through the weather until you choose to erase them.
